This session was very informative. It makes you thinking about empathy in a different way even through we have been taught it in the past. It’s good to be reminded of what it is and continue to use it through our life.
It’s a great message and reminder to hear especially for future medical professionals. It’s also true. In her own experience she explains how empathy helped her too

I’ve had Shari come in several times for discussions with my EMT class about Death/Dying, and empathy with their patients.
I can whole heartedly say that she does an amazing job really introducing a new outlook to future pre-hospital healthcare workers.
Her discussions are both visual, and interactive. Would highly recommend to everyone!

The impact of the empathy training was greatly appreciated by my allied health students. The session was very well-organized, and Shari’s delivery was concise, impressive, and truly impactful. Her openness in sharing her story with such humility was incredibly touching and informative.
I’m so grateful she came to my school to present to our students. If you’re looking for meaningful training for your team—especially in the fields of health, caregiving, or medicine—I highly recommend inviting Shari to speak. It was a powerful and memorable experience!

The presentation was thoughtful and addressed many of the issues which take place during both routine and specialist medical appointments. Shari has lived through many of these appointments and has first hand knowledge of how empathy is key

Shari was amazing! Her stories were so incredible and detailed. She really helps to understand what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes and to know what it means to be empathetic. So glad I got to have the experience of listening to her.

I am blessed to have the opportunity to attend Shari Bookstaff’s, inspiring presentation by which focused on the critical role of empathy in healthcare. She provided presentations for our respiratory care students working towards their Associate of Science in Respiratory Care.
Shari’s story was both moving and impactful, as she shared her own personal journey of undergoing what was supposed to be a routine medical procedure, only to discover she had a brain tumor. This unexpected diagnosis led to a year-long hospitalization, during which she faced numerous physical and emotional challenges.
Throughout the presentation, Shari emphasized the importance of connecting with patients on a human level. She reminded students that beyond the clinical skills they are developing, their ability to empathize and communicate with patients will be vital throughout their careers. One of the most memorable moments was when Shari spoke about her love for marine mammals. She described how her spirits would lift when healthcare professionals engaged her in conversations about whales, dolphins, and other marine creatures during her hospital stay. This not only brought her comfort but also helped her practice her speech, as she would try to pronounce the species names—a therapeutic exercise in itself.
Shari also incorporated a hands-on activity that left a strong impression on the students. She asked them to breathe through a straw, simulating the difficulty of breathing with an artificial airway, which is something she personally experienced when she had to wear a tracheostomy tube. This exercise allowed the students to physically experience the challenge of restricted breathing, reinforcing the importance of compassionate care for patients who face these types of conditions.
Additionally, Shari led an exercise where the students had to hold their arms up until she gave them permission to lower them. This activity was designed to give students a sense of what it feels like to lose control over their body—an experience many patients endure due to illness or medical treatments. It served as a powerful reminder of the vulnerability patients feel and the need for empathy and understanding from their caregivers.
Overall, Shari’s presentation was incredible. It not only provided valuable lessons on empathy and patient care but also gave students a deeper understanding of the human side of healthcare. I wholeheartedly believe that her message is essential for all future respiratory care professionals, and I would love to see Shari invited to present to every future cohort of students. Her story and insights are a gift to the healthcare field, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of it.
Thank you, Shari, for your courage and for sharing your story with us.

Shari Bookstaff spoke at the community college I attended and let me tell you, "Inspirational" should be included in her title! Everyone attending was inspired, and there was not a dry eye in the house after she relayed her story. If ever there was a "Mighty Mouse" hero (or heroine, in her case!), it would be her. The adversity she has overcome would have been to most people insurmountable. Yet through hard work, discipline, and tenacity, Shari learned how to talk and walk again, clawing her way back to where she was before-all this while raising 2 young children on her own! She is an active part of the community, and a Marine Biologist and Professor at Skyline College. Shari's teenage children are bright individuals that have volunteered in the community for years, giving back just as mom taught them. At the end of her story, she raffles off one of her books, and I was the lucky one to have won! Her book goes into even greater depth than what she shares with the audience, making you appreciate and admire her even more! The presentation she gave us was in powerpoint, but a colleague of mine saw her in a restaurant venue-just casual seating of 15 or so at a large, round table. If ever you need to motivate or inspire a crowd, Shari will leave you feeling like there's nothing you can't conquer!
